Earlier the Scottish affairs select committee was hearing about the practical impact of leaving the EU, in particular the impact on immigration.

Unlike much of the rest of the UK, Scotland is currently facing a demographic timebomb, with an increasing elderly population, and not enough working age population to pay the taxes and provide the labour needed to look after them. We desperately need more people to settle in the country, especially around the Highlands and islands, but the uncertainty around Brexit is having quite the opposite effect.

Ian Blackford, the SNP’s leader at Westminster, says he is making a point of order “more in sorrow than in anger”. He says Theresa May said earlier that the government’s economic analysis covered the Brexit option proposed by the government. He says May accused him of inadvertently misleading the House. But she was inadvertently misleading the house.

Andrea Leadsom has urged Conservative MPs not to be “purist” about the changes Theresa May hopes to secure for the Irish backstop arrangement, as she said the House of Commons must give the prime minister more time for negotiations.

The comments are likely to spark concern among Tory Eurosceptics who have insisted the withdrawal agreement must be reopened and legally binding changes made to the backstop, though MPs differ over whether they would like it removed entirely and replaced or just given a time limit.
