Brexiters tasked with working on customs partnership, with ‘max-fac’ option studied by remainers

Theresa May has divided her cabinet into two groups to fight out their differences over Britain’s post-Brexit customs arrangements, intensifying speculation that she is preparing to delay her decision on the issue.

No 10 sources confirmed that the prime minister had formed the working groups, which would report back on her preferred customs partnership model and the maximum-facilitation option at next Tuesday’s meeting of her inner Brexit cabinet.

Sir John Major has warned that a hard border in Ireland will be unavoidable unless Brexiters start to take on board the “collateral damage” that exiting the EU will cause in Northern Ireland.

He said the only way to avoid physical inspection posts for trucks carrying food and livestock was to stay in the customs union, which he said was not a “toxic” option.

As poll finds slim majority wants vote on Brexit deal, MPs say EEA option should be on table

Pro-Europe Labour backbenchers are fighting to keep the pressure on Jeremy Corbyn to reconsider his opposition to membership of the European Economic Area, as new polling for the People’s Vote campaign confirms majority support for a vote on the Brexit deal.

The poll, by Opinium, finds a small overall majority of 53% in favour of a vote on the deal, with 31% opposed.
